2013 Toyota Avalon

  • Starting price of $30,990 for well-equipped Avalon XLE
  • 40-mpg Avalon Hybrid starts at $35,550
  • Optional technology package with adaptive cruise adds $1,750

Toyota has announced pricing for its completely redesigned full-size Avalon. Not only is it available in a 40-mpg hybrid version for the first time, but the well-equipped base 2013 Toyota Avalon XLE has a lower starting manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) than the outgoing model. It now starts at $30,990, and includes features such as heated leather seats, touchscreen audio and a proximity key.

For the conventional, V6-powered Avalon, Toyota offers four trim variants starting with the XLE. The hybrid lineup excludes the base XLE and begins with the XLE Premium. Both V6 and hybrid XLE Premium models include a backup camera and a moonroof. Pricing is $33,195 for the gasoline V6, or $35,555 for the hybrid--a difference of $2,360.

In addition to navigation and Toyota's Entune infotainment platform, the 2013 Avalon XLE Touring adds larger alloy wheels, blind spot and rear cross traffic warning systems and paddle shifters. The conventional and hybrid XLE Touring models are priced at $35,500 and $37,250, respectively.

Only the top-trim Avalon Limited is eligible for the $1,750 Technology package, which adds adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beams and a pre-collision system aimed at improving safety. Even without the optional package, the Avalon Limited includes luxury-grade appointments like heated and ventilated front seats wrapped in perforated leather, rain-sensing wipers, a rear sunshade and a premium sound system by JBL. With a conventional gasoline V6, the MSRP for the Avalon Limited is $39,650. Opt for the hybrid and the suggested price goes up to $41,400.

That's a price premium of only $1,750 for the hybrid when buyers choose the XLE Touring or Limited models. With gasoline now averaging about $3.50/gallon, the break-even point occurs around 33,000 miles. If gas prices rise, the extra cost of the hybrid will be overcome more quickly.

But the Avalon hybrid may not be right for everyone. Drivers who enjoy better performance may prefer the 268-horsepower Avalon V6--even with its 25-mpg combined fuel economy rating--to the thriftier but less powerful hybrid.

The 2013 Toyota Avalon arrives in dealerships early this December.

What it means to you: With starting MSRPs of $30,990 and $35,550, respectively, both the conventional V6-powered and hybrid Avalon models offer buyers the space of a full-size sedan and near luxury features. But only the Avalon Hybrid is EPA-rated at an impressive 40-mpg combined.
