  • 2015 Honda HR-V officially revealed in new photos
  • HR-V will be a crossover based on the subcompact Honda Fit
  • Details are unknown, though sales will start near the end of 2014

Honda is adding an all-new crossover to its lineup. The automaker recently announced that it will soon offer a new compact crossover dubbed the HR-V, which will slot below the popular CR-V in terms of size and pricing.

Although the finalized HR-V wasn't on display at this year's New York Auto Show, Honda used the show to reveal several photos of the new crossover. The images give us an excellent look at the HR-V, which is based on the brand's subcompact Fit hatchback.

On the outside, the HR-V boasts characteristic Honda styling, borrowing its sloping roofline from the CR-V and the upscale Acura brand's compact RDX crossover. While two bold lines sweep down both of the HR-V's sides, maybe the crossover's most distinctive feature is a door handle mounted in the C-pillar at the back of the rear door. This unique touch is unusual in modern cars, though Acura also used it in the boldly styled and newly canceled ZDX crossover.

Although Honda showed off photos of the HR-V, the brand has otherwise been surprisingly tight-lipped about the crossover's details. We haven't seen any interior images, for example, though we expect the HR-V will share many touches with the newly redesigned Fit. One confirmed feature shared by the two cars is the unique Honda Magic Seat, which lets the rear seats fold flat for increased storage space.

Honda also has yet to announce what's under the HR-V's hood. While the 2015 Fit uses a 130-horsepower 1.5-liter 4-cylinder, that engine may not be powerful enough to propel the undoubtedly heavier HR-V. Still, we expect that the HR-V will offer less power than the larger CR-V, which uses a 185-hp 4-cylinder.

Regardless of its interior specs and powertrain details, the HR-V will face growing competition when it goes on sale closer to the end of the year. Chevrolet recently announced its own compact crossover, dubbed the Trax, while many car shoppers are increasingly focused on other fuel-efficient compact crossovers such as the Mazda CX-5 and MINI Countryman.

Given that the HR-V will compete with those models, we expect its pricing to start in the low-$20,000 range, though Honda says it won't announce finalized pricing figures until we're closer to the crossover's official launch.

What it means to you: The 2015 Honda HR-V allows you to combine crossover practicality and driving position with the fuel economy and affordability of a Honda Fit.
