  • Fully redesigned Nissan Frontier likely revealed
  • Fresher, more modern look
  • Many new features inside and out

After showing off several teaser images and videos, Nissan has pulled the cover off its next-generation midsize pickup, which we expect will come to the United States sometime in 2015 as the Nissan Frontier. The truck, officially revealed in "global-market" guise as the Navara, boasts new styling, new features and a completely new interior with several modern touches.

On the outside, Nissan's new pickup is easily distinguished from the current Frontier thanks to a totally new look. There are softer, more modern lines than the outgoing blocky truck, there's a more aggressive front end, and there are new LED running lights (probably an option or standard on top trim levels). The truck also adds a little extra style with a more pronounced kink in the rear window.

Changes inside are even more substantial. Gone is the truck's cheap-looking plastic dashboard, replaced instead by a more stylish cabin with highly improved materials.

In addition to its new look inside and out, Nissan's new pickup also includes a host of new features. There's available push-button ignition, for example, and a multi-color thin-film-transistor display in the gauge cluster. The latest truck also includes a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel and a center-mounted touchscreen. And for those who take their trucks off-road, Nissan is boasting electronic driver aids such as hill-descent control and hill-start assist.

While Nissan has not yet announced engines for U.S.-bound Frontier vehicles, buyers in other parts of the world can choose between two powerplants: a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and a 2.5-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder. Given that Nissan showed a diesel powered Frontier Concept at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show, Nissan is likely considering the turbodiesel for U.S. buyers. A gas-powered 4-cylinder currently serves as the Frontier's base-level engine, and we expect it to carry over to the new model. We also expect the new Frontier to offer a V6 as well, though we're not sure if the current 4.0 liter engine will remain or if Nissan has something better planned. Fortunately, fuel economy for both engines should improve, as Nissan says that the new pickup will offer a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Nissan's official stand is that the introduction of this new "global market" pickup "...is not an indication of an impending launch of a new Nissan Frontier for the U.S." The truth is, the Nissan Navara pickup has always been very similar to the Frontier American buyers know and love, we expect that relationship to continue.

What it means to you: An all-new Nissan Frontier will likely hit the U.S. just in time to compete with the all-new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups. If you wan the newest, latest midsize pickup, wait for the new Frontier or Colorado. If you're an ardent bargain hunter, the current Nissan Frontier is likely to become a seriously good deal in the near future.
