To combat "range anxiety," Nissan is making strides to give Leaf owners a way to check on their cars even when they're away. The Leaf's CARWINGS application, formerly only available on iPhone, has just been released for Blackberry and Android operating systems.

"Nissan understands that telematics and other communication services are important for consumers," said Trisha Jung, director, Vehicle Connected Services, Nissan North America. "By providing accessibility and functionality to the Nissan Leaf through all major smartphone platforms, we are truly delivering ‘Innovation for All.'"

The application is available to anyone with a Nissan Leaf, an active CARWINGS subscription, or "an interest in better understanding the Nissan LEAF as a pioneer in electric vehicles".

Nissan Leaf's CARWINGS system, free for the first three years, uses both your smartphone and computer. The application sends a signal over your phone's cellular network, which is received by CARWINGS central data center. The center sends data back to the car collecting whatever information or action the owner is seeking.

Since the Leaf must be recharged in order to continue driving, the application is designed to ease owners' search for charging stations, as well as program the car's charging cycles at home. Between the mobile application and the online version for computers, owners can do several things with the Leaf. CARWINGS can remotely start and stop charging, set specific charging times, set climate control systems, update the navigation system with charging stations near your current location, and even remind owners to plug in their cars.

With the application's availability to iPhone, Android and Blackberry users, more consumers can plan their trips and charge times than ever before.
