What Is It?

The Audi TT Offroad Concept is a concept crossover with an emphasis on performance and style over practicality. Although technically called the TT Offroad Concept, the crossover likely previews what we might expect from a future Audi Q4, which could slot between the compact Audi Q3 and the midsize Q5.

On the outside, the TT Offroad Concept boasts a sporty look that reminds us a lot of the car for which it's named: the brand's small TT sports car. That's due to the steeply raked rear end, which looks like the TT's hatchback lift gate, and the large arches that sit above all four wheels. The TT Offroad Concept also features bold, narrow headlights, Audi's signature grille and raised ground clearance for off-road use.

Inside, the TT Offroad Concept is also uniquely Audi. It boasts a high-quality interior that features lots of stitching, a huge screen in place of a gauge cluster, and unique circular air vents. There's also a flat-bottomed steering wheel with a bright red starter button that gives the cabin an especially sporty look.

Under the hood, the TT Offroad Concept boasts not a V8 or even a powerful V6 but rather a 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The 4-cylinder is a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit, while electric motors boast 40 kilowatts for the front axles and 85 kW in back. The result is more than 400 horsepower and a 0-to-60 time of 5.2 seconds.

Will They Ever Sell It?

We'd be surprised to see the TT Offroad Concept reach production in its current form. While it looks almost production-ready, we think it's a little too sporty for the segment, and the plug-in hybrid drivetrain might drive up production costs. Still, we think Audi will eventually offer a Q4, and it may be largely derived from this concept car.

Why It's Important

The Audi TT Offroad Concept is important for several reasons. One is that it reiterates Audi's commitment to alternative fuel technology, given that it uses a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It also shows us that Audi is interested in a high-performance crossover and in developing a sporty vehicle with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

More importantly, however, the TT Offroad Concept gives us a glimpse into Audi's future plans for its SUV range. While the brand only offers its Q5 and Q7 crossovers in the U.S., a smaller Q3 is set to go on sale later this year. The TT Offroad Concept likely previews a potential Q4, which would offer a sporty new take on the small crossover segment.
