BMW Announces Performance Package for 335i
BMW has announced the addition of a performance package for its 335i sedan. Dubbed the BMW Performance Edition, the package adds horsepower, improves acceleration and offers exterior revisions, visually distinguishing Performance Edition models from their standard counterparts.
Available through the end of 2011, the BMW Performance Edition package's main advantage is a power and torque increase over the standard 335i sedan. On models equipped with the package, horsepower jumps from 300 to 320, while torque rises from 317 pound-feet to 332 - similar figures to the sport-tuned 335is coupe and convertible, which debuted last year. According to BMW, the increased horsepower improves the 335i's zero-to-60 miles per hour time by 0.2 seconds, and its 50mph to 75mph acceleration by a full half-second. But, despite the increased power and improved acceleration, BMW promises emissions and fuel economy figures are unaffected by the power upgrade.
Codenamed "ZMZ" to recall "ZHP" performance packages on earlier 3-series models, the Performance Edition package will also feature subtle exterior modifications. BMW says 335i models equipped with the package will gain black kidney grilles and a unique "BMW Performance Edition" badge, setting them apart from traditional 335i sedans.
Already on sale, the BMW Performance Edition package costs just $550 - a reasonable price considering its improved performance. While the package is available on both rear- and all-wheel drive 335i sedans, BMW has not announced plans to make it available for coupe or convertible versions of the 3-series, or for other models in its lineup. However, the automaker says the package will be made available through its dealers to existing 135i and 335i customers as an aftermarket kit.
On sale since spring 2006, the current 3-series, is widely expected to receive a major redesign in the near future. BMW has hinted that an updated model will appear at the Frankfurt Auto Show this fall, with US sales likely beginning next spring.
