2008 Chevrolet Malibu

  • The 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura are included.
  • A component of the automatic transmission is potentially defective.
  • The parked vehicle could roll away unexpectedly.

General Motors is calling back 426,240 vehicles to repair a component of the automatic transmission that, if faulty, could result in a parked car rolling away unexpectedly. The broad GM recall includes 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 models and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura models. It affects vehicles equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

GM says tabs on the transmission shift cable end might fracture and separate. If this occurs, the indicated position on the shift lever and the transmission's actual gear selection could be mismatched. Drivers will choose Park and move the lever accordingly, but the transmission might not actually be set to Park, putting the vehicle at risk of rolling away unexpectedly.

GM has not yet determined a notification schedule to alert owners, but once scheduled, dealers will perform all repairs at no charge to customers. GM will either install a retainer over the shift cable end fitting or replace the cable altogether.

Some models included in the recall are new enough to be included in dealers' certified pre-owned (CPO) inventories. Although GM no longer markets new vehicles under the Saturn or Pontiac nameplates, both brands are still sold as CPO vehicles. All affected CPO vehicles must be repaired under the recall before being sold.

Used car shoppers considering one of the affected models from a private seller should check the vehicle records to determine if recall repairs were completed. If not, a dealer can handle the repair at no charge.

The recall process helps to ensure vehicle safety by isolating potential dangers and repairing them before they cause problems. In this case, elevated warranty claims on the shift cable in these vehicles was the red flag that prompted a closer look. While this GM recall might present a minor inconvenience for owners or dealers, the effort will likely minimize the danger presented by the faulty component.

For more information, owners can contact GM at 1-800-521-7300 and reference recall number 12106. Alternately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists all automotive recalls on its website, SaferCar.gov, and offers further information on the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. NHTSA uses campaign ID 12V460000 for this recall.

What it means to you: If you're shopping for a 4-speed automatic-equipped 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu or Pontiac G6, or 2007-2010 Saturn Aura, be sure the vehicle has been serviced under this recall. If not, have a GM dealer perform the work at no charge.
