  • Combines the best of the Veyron Grand Sport and Super Sport models
  • Quad-turbo sixteen-cylinder engine produces 1200 horsepower
  • Likely top-speed limited, but infinite headroom with open-top cockpit

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is the fastest production automobile on the planet. With a massive sixteen-cylinder engine producing 1200 horsepower, the ultimate Veyron has a verified top speed of nearly 268 mph, or about 4.5 miles per minute.

Now, Bugatti has unveiled the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse at the Geneva Auto Show. Following the Super Sport and open-top Veyron Grand Sport models, the vehicle that Bugatti calls "the most powerful roadster of all time" combines the best of both - a wind-in-your-hair open-top design like the Grand Sport and the ferocious powerplant from the mighty Super Sport.

"Vitesse" is French for "speed," and the Grand Sport Vitesse naturally delivers. Its eight-liter engine boasts four intercooled turbochargers for the same massive horsepower and 1100 lb-ft torque of the Super Sport. But with the roof off and aerodynamics consequently disrupted, top speed will likely be limited, as on the Grand Sport. In open-top form, that 1001-horsepower roadster will not exceed 229 mph, still a remarkably high speed befitting a world-class supercar.

Whatever the Grand Sport Vitesse's limits, the combination of the Super Sport's mechanicals and the Grand Sport's open cockpit design are certain to thrill. Wolfgang Durheimer, Bugatti's president, says the Vitesse is a result of seizing on the opportunity to bring together the best attributes of these two spectacular machines.

"The rapid success of the Super Sport convinced us to increase the performance of the Bugatti roadster. Once again our engineers worked hard to demonstrate that Bugatti is able to constantly redefine the boundaries of what is technically feasible," said Durheimer. "We gave our all to transfer the achievements of the Super Sport over to the Grand Sport, thereby turning open-top driving itself into an extraordinary experience at high speed."

Bugatti has not announced pricing for the Vitesse, but a number close to the Super Sport's $2.5-million price tag can be expected. Along with limited production, this will ensure that the Vitesse is as rare as it is fast.

What it means to you: If the 1001-horsepower Grand Sport lacks the power and performance you require, the new Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has the same open-top design but more power and a longer, cooler sounding name.
