  • The Siri virtual assistant is being added to Cadillac CUE
  • CUE will also gain faster response times
  • Customers will be notified of changes in March

Cadillac's CUE infotainment system will soon receive its first update since launching in 2011. CUE -- which stands for Cadillac User Experience -- will have new features and some revisions which were designed to correct issues with today's system.

Expected later this year, the update will likely solve an issue many users have with CUE. That issue is the system's response time, which has been criticized for being too slow. Many testers have found that CUE hesitates after an on-screen selection is made. That causes confusion about whether a button has been pressed or if drivers need to make the selection again.

In addition to quicker responses, the updated CUE is also likely to cut down on load times. That means drivers may not have to wait as long for directions after entering an address, for example.

But CUE updates won't stop there. The improved CUE technology is also expected to integrate Apple's Siri concierge functions. That means drivers with iPhones that have Siri will be able to use the system in their cars and get a response over the vehicle's speakers.

The addition of Siri isn't a big surprise for Cadillac, since fellow GM brand Chevrolet already offers it. Indeed, Chevrolet's youth-oriented Spark and Sonic subcompacts tout Siri integration. In those models, drivers can ask Siri questions or bark commands without ever taking their eyes off the road.

Siri integration is also spreading to other brands. Honda recently announced its all-new Accord sedan and its upscale Acura ILX and RDX models will offer the feature as a dealer-installed option. And Mercedes offers Siri as an option on its European A-Class hatchback.

Beyond faster response times and Siri, CUE will only offer further small changes. They include evacuation routes for coastal areas, a larger street name database and the ability to display album art when music is loaded through the USB port.

While Cadillac hasn't confirmed an arrival date for its CUE updates, the brand says customers will be notified of the revisions starting in March. Cadillac drivers who currently have CUE will likely be able to easily update their systems with the changes.

What it means to you: If you find Cadillac CUE frustrating, consider waiting for the latest update and giving it another shot.
