  • Chevrolet Silverado SSV purpose-built for police use
  • Pickup offers 5.3-liter V8, upgraded brake rotors, other revisions
  • Fleet-only Silverado SSV will go on sale this summer

Chevrolet is adding an all-new police-ready model to its Silverado full-size-pickup lineup. The all-new 2015 Chevrolet Silverado SSV (Special Services Vehicle) goes on sale this summer with several unique features designed especially for police use.

According to Chevrolet, the Silverado SSV starts its life as a standard Silverado Crew Cab with the truck's optional 5.3-liter V8 engine instead of the standard 4.3-liter V6. The automaker then modifies the truck for police use, making several changes to the pickup's interior, exterior and mechanicals.

The biggest changes come under the skin. The standard alternator and battery are replaced with heavy-duty units, including an especially high-output 170-amp alternator. These items are installed to allow officers to operate lights, radios, computers, cameras and other important equipment necessary for law-enforcement duties. Silverado SSV models also boast upgraded brake rotors designed to offer double the service life of a standard Silverado's rotors. And the Silverado SSV adds additional auxiliary switches and extra power supply, all of which is located on the center stack for easy access.

Interior revisions over the standard Silverado are also thorough. There's a vinyl rear seat for transporting suspects, along with a front center seat delete option that removes the front center seat so officers can use the console for additional police equipment. Police departments can opt for a partition that separates the front seats from the back. The truck also offers an unusual common key option, which allows police departments to operate all of their Silverado and Tahoe SSV models using just one key.

On the outside, the Silverado SSV is largely similar to the standard Silverado, though it does boast a few changes. The biggest updates are a standard spotlight mounted on the A-pillar and the deletion of the truck's standard daytime running lights. Chevrolet says departments wishing to order light bars, sirens and extra spotlights can also do so through the automaker.

While Chevrolet has not yet announced pricing for its upcoming Silverado SSV, the automaker says the SSV is based on the 1WT or 1LS Crew Cab trim levels. As a result, we'd expect the pickup to start somewhere in the mid-$30,000 range, though we caution against getting your hopes too high, as Chevrolet says the pickup will only be available to fleet buyers.

What it means to you: The purpose-built 2015 Chevrolet Silverado SSV adds yet another option to the ever-growing list of vehicles that police departments can choose from.
