2013 Chevrolet Camaro

  • Navigation will be optional in the 2013 Camaro
  • The Camaro will also offer MyLink infotainment
  •  Pricing for the options has not yet been announced

After several years of requests from customers, Chevrolet is finally adding an available navigation system to its sporty Camaro. That's the latest from the automaker's Facebook page, where the upcoming touchscreen system was teased ahead of its debut in the retro-styled sports car.

According to Chevrolet, the Camaro's seven-inch, center-mounted touchscreen will become available for the 2013 model year. The system, which will be offered as an option on all Camaro LT, SS and ZL1 models, will also include the automaker's new MyLink infotainment system in addition to a full-color navigation display. That means in addition to navigation, the 2013 Camaro will offer a host of other convenient technology including Pandora Internet radio, Gracenote music identification and hands-free voice control for infotainment and climate control functions.

Like the center-mounted touchscreens included in several of Chevrolet's other cars, the Camaro's system is expected to feature so-called "capacitive touch" technology. That means the buttons that surround the screen don't depress when pushed, but rather respond when sensors determine a human finger is touching them. Similar technology is also used in many of today's smartphones and other in-car touchscreen systems.

While Chevrolet has not yet announced pricing for the Camaro's MyLink system with navigation, we expect the feature will likely cost around $1,000. Several other 2013 Chevrolet models - including the Volt hatchback and Equinox SUV - offer the system as standard equipment, while the 2013 Malibu includes it only on upscale LT, LTZ and ECO trim levels. Chevrolet says it will also offer MyLink on its upcoming 2013 Spark subcompact and a facelifted 2013 Traverse SUV, which is expected to go on sale later this year.

Regardless of the navigation system's cost, Camaro buyers will likely be eagerly awaiting its arrival. That's because the automaker initially announced the Camaro would include a navigation system in 2009 before plans were shelved due to the recession, causing owners and prospective buyers to clamor for the technology ever since. The announcement revealing the upcoming navigation system, which was posted on the Camaro's official Facebook page, has already drawn more than 160 comments and over 2,000 "likes."

Although Chevrolet has not yet announced pricing for the 2013 Camaro, the automaker says the sports car will go on sale this fall. In addition to the new navigation system, the 2013 Camaro will also offer a new "1LE Performance Package," which features improved performance for amateur track-day racers.

What it means to you: If you can't live without navigation in your Camaro, wait for a 2013 model.
