What Is It?

The Ford Edge Concept is a preview of the next-generation Ford Edge midsize crossover SUV, which could debut as soon as the 2016 model year. Although the current Edge is still one of the best-selling crossovers in its class, its roots date back to 2007, so a full redesign is overdue.

The Edge Concept looks a lot like the current model from the outside, with one major exception: the new front end. Reminding us more of a Tonka truck than a family-friendly crossover, the Edge Concept's squared-off grille and elevated hood certainly add some visual impact. Whether shorter drivers will be able to see over that hood is a separate matter, but presumably Ford will figure that out before production starts. As for what will be under that hood, we know an EcoBoost option is in the mix, but there are no further powertrain details at this time.

The changes are more significant inside, where the Edge Concept sports a curvaceous new dashboard that flows smoothly into the doors and center console. Exposed stitching and leather-look trim give the dash an upscale appearance. The central infotainment screen is set to host the latest version of MyFord Touch, while the gauge cluster behind the steering wheel features a color information screen of its own. We doubt the "Star Trek" headrests will make it to the assembly line, but we concede that they look pretty cool.

The main selling point of the next-generation Edge, though, will be its technology features. Most notably, a new self-parking system will automate both parking-space entry and exit, and you can even operate it via remote control. That's right -- you can press a button on the key fob and watch as your Edge pulls itself out of its parking spot. Active safety features join the roster as well, including collision-avoidance technology with automatic braking and steering. And to enhance fuel economy, a combination of active grille shutters and unique fascia-mounted air curtains should make the Edge more efficient than ever.

Will They Ever Sell It?

Absolutely. We're actually surprised by how production-ready the Ford Edge Concept's interior looks. Don't get stuck on the "Concept" part, because this is likely an accurate representation of what the real Edge will be like.

Why It's Important

The Edge is one of Ford's top sellers, and it's always risky to mess with success. We'll see if Ford can reinvent its stalwart midsize crossover without alienating the Edge's many fans.
