High-Performance Range Rover Sport SVR Teased Ahead of Launch
- High-performance SVR model coming to Range Rover Sport lineup in 2015
- Will offer 550 horsepower, a 40-hp boost over Supercharged trim
- Rivals include Mercedes ML63 AMG, Porsche Cayenne Turbo
Land Rover has officially announced new details about an upcoming high-performance version of the brand's Range Rover Sport SUV. Officially dubbed the Range Rover Sport SVR, the new SUV will offer extra horsepower and other sporty touches when it launches next year.
According to Land Rover, the biggest upgrade required to turn the Range Rover Sport into the high-performance SVR model was a more powerful engine. The SVR will feature a monstrous 550-hp 5.0-liter supercharged V8, offering a 40-hp boost over the standard Range Rover Sport Supercharged. More importantly, the SVR boasts an impressive 210-hp gain over the base-level Range Rover Sport.
Land Rover says that the extra power goes a long way to improve the sporty credibility of the brand's Range Rover Sport SUV, which launched in 2006 as a smaller, less expensive alternative to the full-size Range Rover. According to the automaker, the SVR's 0-to-60 time is a sports-car-fast 4.8 seconds, largely due to the increased power, standard 4-wheel drive, and quick 8-speed automatic that delivers the SUV's power to the ground.
The Range Rover Sport SVR also includes a few upgrades to its exterior. Most notably, the SUV offers muscular side skirts, a more aggressive front end with larger air intakes, and a sporty rear bumper that houses both a diffuser and quad exhaust pipes. Inside, the SUV will likely offer grippy Recaro bucket seats, while unique alloy wheels will help set apart the SVR from a standard Range Rover Sport.
For those wondering why you might need this much performance in an SUV, it's important to note that the new SVR isn't the first entrant in this increasingly crowded segment. Rivals include the 555-hp BMW X5M, which will likely be redesigned shortly, the 500-hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and the Mercedes ML63 AMG, which offers 518 or 550 hp depending on the options you choose.
While Land Rover hasn't announced an official launch date for the Range Rover Sport SVR, we'd be surprised to see it this year. Expect it to make the rounds at this winter's auto shows, with sales officially beginning in early or mid-2015.
What it means to you: The Range Rover Sport lineup adds a new dimension with the high-performance SVR model.
