  • Honda reveals sketch of new Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) concept
  • The zero-emissions car will have its global debut at the LA Auto Show next week
  • FCEV production version is due out in 2015

Honda's alternative energy story continues to evolve. To that end, the automaker has revealed an artist's rendering of the fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept to be unveiled globally at this week's LA Auto Show. The sketch of the Honda FCEV car expresses a new design direction that's more futuristic and performance-oriented for the next-generation fuel-cell electric vehicle due out in 2015. The production version is intended for both the U.S. and Japan.

"The Honda FCEV Concept demonstrates the company's vision for the future of personal mobility and our commitment to developing advanced alternative fuel vehicles," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "As we work toward the introduction of our next-generation fuel-cell vehicle in 2015, our long-term experience with fuel-cell technologies will help us pave a way towards a zero-emissions future."

Honda's first foray into fuel cell technology was the FCX in 2002. A few years later, the brisk and modern-looking FCX Clarity followed. A small handful of FCX Clarity vehicles are still on the road today, boasting quiet operation and zero emissions. The Honda FCEV is clearly the next iteration in the Japanese Giant's fuel-cell efforts. While the Clarity's fuel cell stack yields 134 horsepower and a 350-mile driving range, the new FCEV will likely offer consumers a more powerful driving experience and less range anxiety.

Visually, the Honda FCEV Concept appears to tout an aerodynamic shape with prominent air intakes on the front and sides of the vehicle. With its sleek profile and sport-infused lines, some may even say this zero-emissions cruiser has elements inspired by the NSX supercar from Acura.

What it means to you: For those interested in a cleaner, greener mode of transportation, Honda is paving the way. The FCEV may prove to be one of most sustainable vehicles for everyday driving. Not to mention, a total head-turner.
