  • The G sedan will drop its base-level G25 model for 2013
  • EX and FX models will swap out their 3.5-liter V6 for a 3.7-liter powerplant
  • The revised EX37 and FX37 will go on sale this summer

Infiniti has announced that the 2013 model year will bring major changes to three of its most popular models. According to the automaker, the G sedan will lose an available engine choice for the new model year, while the mid-size FX and compact EX crossovers will gain a new standard powerplant.

For many automotive enthusiasts, Infiniti's most surprising news for 2013 is the cancellation of the base-level G25 sedan. Powered by a 218-horsepower 2.5-liter V6, the G25 was released just two years ago for the 2011 model year. But sales of the G25 paled in comparison to its more powerful stablemate, the 328-hp G37, which was an easy upgrade for most buyers thanks to a price jump of less than $4,000 over the base model.

But while the mid-size G sedan is losing its base engine, the luxurious EX and FX crossovers are upgrading theirs. According to the automaker, both SUVs will finally become the EX37 and FX37 for 2013 by swapping out their 297-hp 3.5-liter V6 powerplants for 3.7-liter units producing 325 hp. The engine swap will come as no surprise to Infiniti enthusiasts, since the muscular 3.7-liter V6 has seen use in the automaker's G37 and M37 models for several years and in the European FX since its 2009 debut.

Surprisingly, although the smaller EX and FX SUVs will gain the new 3.7-liter V6 for 2013, the larger JX crossover-which went on sale earlier this year-will retain the outgoing 3.5-liter engine. That decision is causing many industry observers to speculate that the JX will see the new engine for 2014, as it's the last remaining Infiniti model to use the 3.5-liter powerplant.

Infiniti will also highlight the 2013 model year by rolling out the previously-announced IPL G convertible. Expected to go on sale in June with a base price of more than $60,000, the high-performance droptop will add sporty flair-and 18 hp-to the base-level G37 convertible.

According to Infiniti, the updated FX37 will be available at dealerships in July, while the revised EX37 will make its debut in August. Infiniti has not yet announced when production of the G25 will stop but says it plans to market the sedan actively through the end of the year.

What it means to you: If you're interested in an EX or FX, you may want to wait until the new model year to get more grunt -or hurry to a dealership now for a good deal.
