2012 Jeep Compass

  • The Compass concept features several exterior revisions
  • Updates include black wheels and other black-painted items
  • A 2.2-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder is under the hood

Jeep revealed an all-new concept version of its compact Compass SUV at this year's Geneva Auto Show. Featuring an upgraded interior and a unique exterior, the revised Compass was one of three Jeep models shown in Geneva that highlight the brand's increasing emphasis on European customers.

On the outside, the new Compass concept features an overhauled exterior with an exclusive all black appearance. According to Jeep, which describes the revised Compass as a "production-intent concept," the SUV features black gloss front end accents, 18-inch black-painted aluminum wheels, black gloss headlamp and fog lamp surrounds, and black grille inserts in place of the standard model's chromed grille. Inside, the SUV is characterized by unique leather upholstery and chrome door sills immediately visible upon opening its doors.

Under the hood, the Compass concept features diesel engine technology, which is heavily favored over gasoline power by European consumers. According to Jeep, the SUV offers a 2.2-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine capable of producing 163 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. The automaker also says the Compass concept includes a full-time four-wheel drive system dubbed Freedom Drive that provides drivers with year-round assurance in inclement weather and on rough roads.

European consumers will further enjoy the Compass concept thanks to its impressive sound system, which is highlighted by 368-watt Boston Acoustics speakers. Other standard features include Bluetooth, a 30-gigabyte hard drive, USB compatibility and Chrysler's UConnect multimedia and infotainment system, which includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen.

Although Jeep hasn't announced when the Compass concept will go on sale, we think the automaker is poised to offer it to European consumers sometime this year. And while we aren't sure if the model will make it stateside, we wouldn't be surprised if Jeep decided to offer the Compass concept's handsome black exterior revisions as a unique trim package or special edition model to US buyers in the near future.

Other Jeep models revealed in Geneva include a sporty, diesel-powered version of the recently redesigned Grand Cherokee and the brightly-colored special edition Wrangler Mountain.

What it means to you: We wouldn't be surprised if Jeep adapts its European models for American consumers - but don't expect a diesel engine anytime soon.
