  • Hyundai Equus-based flagship sedan expected next year
  • Name is unknown, dubbed Quoris in South Korea
  • First ads to run during Super Bowl

A new luxury sedan is coming to Kia's lineup. The automaker recently announced it will soon release a new flagship model based on the Hyundai Equus, with upscale pricing and features to match.

According to Kia, the new flagship sedan -- called the Quoris in South Korea -- will arrive at dealers sometime next year. The first advertisements will run during the Super Bowl in February, likely so the upmarket new model debuts with the largest impact possible.

But while we know when to expect Kia's new luxury sedan, we're not sure what it will offer. One unknown is its name: While it's called the Quoris in South Korea, other markets know the sedan as the K9. Currently, the model is sold in several Asian countries and in the Middle East.

We're clearer on what's under the luxurious Kia's skin, because it's based on the Hyundai Equus, a flagship sedan from Kia's sister brand. As a result, we can expect rear-wheel drive, an 8-speed automatic transmission and dimensions that rival full-size luxury cars such as the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series.

The high-end vehicle is also expected to carry a V8 under the hood. While Korean-market Quoris models offer a choice between two V6s, the Equus uses a 429-horsepower 5.0-liter V8. That engine seems more likely for the American market, since shoppers expect V8 power from cars sized like the Equus and Quoris.

Although pricing is unknown, the automaker previously promised to offer "BMW 7 Series value for a BMW 5 Series price." That's in line with the Equus model's pricing strategy, as the car starts around $60,000 with shipping -- roughly the same as a well-equipped BMW 535i.

If you're interested in the flagship vehicle, keep checking for updates. We expect to hear more about the car at an upcoming auto show, where the automaker will surely announce a few details, including the sedan's name.

What it means to you: The Kia flagship will likely offer a long list of amenities for a bargain price compared to upscale rivals.
