  • Last BMW M3 Coupe recently produced
  • M3 Convertible lives on until September
  • Both will soon become M4, based on new 4 Series

BMW has officially built its last M3 Coupe. The final unit of the iconic car recently rolled down the production line, as BMW gets ready to replace the 3 Series Coupe with the all-new 4 Series.

The final M3 Coupe was finished in orange, though BMW didn't announce any other details about the car. Still, don't expect to buy it at your local dealership. It's likely BMW will save the important M3 for display at its museum in Munich, Germany.

For many BMW enthusiasts, the M3 Coupe's demise marks the end of an era, as more than 40,000 units have been built since its late 1980s debut. Many car lovers consider the M3 the beginning of a major auto industry trend that involves turning a regular model (such as the 3 Series) into a high-performance sports car.

While the original M3 offered only two doors, later models included a sedan variant. A convertible has always been offered -- and BMW says today's M3 Convertible will remain in production through September.

But when the M3 Convertible ceases production, the 2-door M3 will be gone for good. Of course, BMW won't stay out of this market forever. The automaker will soon release an all-new M4 based on the brand's upcoming 4 Series Coupe and Convertible. And the M3 name will live on as a 4-door sedan.

BMW has not yet announced details on the upcoming M4 Coupe. But no matter what changes the automaker delivers, we expect the new model to follow the M3's tried-and-true formula. That means subtle styling changes and a big engine under the hood. The only difference will be a new name.

What it means to you: If you're in the market for a BMW M3 Coupe, hurry to your dealer to get one of the last ones around. Otherwise, be prepared to wait for the new M4.
