Lexus Teases New GS Models
Lexus may have pulled the cover off its all-new, fourth-generation GS sedan just weeks ago at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, but that doesn't mean it's done showing off the new sedan. Lexus recently released teaser images of the GS350 F-Sport and GS450h Hybrid, two new variants set to arrive in dealer showrooms early next year.
One teaser image shows the GS350 F-Sport, which will be a slightly sportier version of the standard GS350 sedan. Previous Lexus "F-Sport" models featured exterior revisions including body kits and unique wheels, interior upgrades and firmer suspension to improve steering and handling.
The automaker also teased the upcoming GS450h Hybrid. While Lexus didn't release details to go along with the photos, it's likely the newest GS hybrid will continue using the previous model's 339-horsepower 3.5-liter hybrid V6 and continuously-variable automatic transmission, which made for an impressive 22 city miles per gallon and 25 mpg on the highway.
Conspicuously absent from Lexus's teaser photos was the V8-powered GS460 sedan. While a V8 powerplant has been a staple of the Lexus range since the GS400's 1998 debut, the automaker may be abandoning the engine in the wake of tightening fuel economy and emissions regulations. The 2011 Lexus GS460 featured a muscular 342 horsepower, but achieved only 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, even with a fuel-saving 8-speed automatic transmission.
Of course, the new GS350 F-Sport and GS450h Hybrid will join the recently-revealed 2013 GS350, which features new technology and completely revised interior and exterior styling. Like its predecessor, the GS350 features a 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Lexus says it will arrive in dealerships early next year, and will compete with other midsize premium sedans like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Infiniti M and Mercedes E-Class.
