What Is It?

The Mazda Hazumi Concept is a handsome subcompact hatchback that Mazda says is just a concept car for now. Despite this, it's clear that the Hazumi previews the next Mazda2, given similarities in the cars' overall shape and size.

On the outside, the Hazumi seems to bring a more modern appearance to the Mazda2's styling and dimensions. Sculpted lines styled after those on the Mazda3 and Mazda6, for example, feature prominently on both sides. The front end boasts the brand's new grille shape, and the Hazumi uses narrow front and rear lights, just like other newly redesigned Mazda models.

Inside, the Hazumi feels a lot more like a concept car than the realistic exterior styling might suggest. There's a futuristic gauge cluster finished in aluminum, a sporty shift lever and minimalist climate controls. There's also a thick, sporty 3-spoke steering wheel with shift paddles. Mazda says that power comes from a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine.

Will They Ever Sell It?

The Hazumi Concept will never reach production in its current state, but we think it may inspire the next-generation Mazda2. Since today's Mazda2 came out for the 2011 model year, we wouldn't be surprised to see a Hazumi-inspired Mazda2 reach dealers in the next few years.

Why It's Important

Since its debut in 2011, the Mazda2 has earned mixed reviews and lackluster sales. If the next Mazda2 borrows a few details from the Mazda Hazumi Concept, the brand could turn around its position in the subcompact car segment. That would be a big deal for Mazda, since it already sells competent, well-equipped compact and midsize vehicles in the Mazda3 and Mazda6. By offering strong choices in each segment, Mazda could snag more buyers and further improve its reputation.
