ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2012 Mazda Miata MX5

author photo by Jeffrey Archer
  • The MX-5 Special Edition features a black power hardtop.
  • Mazda says exclusive red and white exterior colors will be offered.
  • Only 450 units of the new model will be produced.

Mazda revealed a special edition of its sporty MX-5 Miata at this year's Chicago Auto Show. Simply dubbed the 2012 MX-5 Special Edition, the model will be produced in limited quantities and features several exclusive touches both inside and out.

On the outside, the MX-5 Miata Special Edition is offered in two exclusive exterior colors: white and red. But despite its available body colors, the new model includes a standard power retractable hardtop finished in black, marking the first time the automaker has deviated the color of its available hardtop on a US-spec MX-5 Miata. Other exterior upgrades include unique black-painted 17-inch alloy wheels and several black exterior accents like a unique grille and mirror housings.

Although changes to the interior of the MX-5 Miata Special Edition are limited, the sports car's "black" theme is continued inside. There, the Special Edition features standard black heated leather seats and piano black interior accessories peppered throughout the cabin.

While the MX-5 Special Edition doesn't offer a boost to the standard MX-5 Miata's 167-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant, the new model does add several formerly optional features to its standard equipment list. Such items include the premium package, which features Bluetooth, xenon headlights, keyless starting and satellite radio, and the suspension package, which adds performance-oriented Bilstein shock absorbers, a limited-slip differential and a sport-tuned suspension.

Although we don't yet know finalized pricing figures for the MX-5 Miata Special Edition, our guess is that the small sports car will come in somewhere around $30,000. Interested buyers will need to hurry to their dealers to claim theirs, as Mazda says it only plans to build 450 copies for the entire country.

The MX-5 Miata Special Edition was joined on stage at this year's Chicago Auto Show by an original 1990 Miata, which was manufactured soon after the roadster made its debut at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show. According to Mazda, the classic Miata displayed on this year's show stand was the 15th one ever built and features just 3,688 original miles.

What it means to you: The MX-5 Miata Special Edition is likely to be considered the ultimate example of today's MX-5 Miata.
