Mercedes Shows C63 Black Series
Although Mercedes only recently revealed its 2012 C-class coupe, the automaker has already pulled the wraps off the high-performance version. Slated for a spring debut, the limited-edition C63 AMG Black Series Coupe features interior and exterior upgrades, new high-performance features and a powerful engine designed to help the newest Mercedes compete with established players in the sports car game.
For most sports car fans, the C63 AMG Black Series Coupe's most important feature is its engine. Knowing that, Mercedes has delivered tremendously, giving the Black Series a 6.2-liter V8 putting out 510 horsepower – an increase of nearly 60 horses over the standard 6.2-liter V8 found in traditional C63 AMG models.
The only transmission offered is Mercedes' Speedshift MCT, a seven-speed automatic featuring dual computer-controlled clutches to enhance shift speed. According to Mercedes, the muscular engine and quick transmission team up to propel the Black Series from a standing start to 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds.
But updates to the Black Series don't stop under the hood. Like other Black Series models, the C63 AMG Black Series Coupe features widened wheel arches, an enlarged front air dam and unique larger wheels designed to give it a more aggressive look. Other exterior modifications, including an aluminum hood and plastic composite fenders, were done with weight reduction in mind.
On the inside, the C63 AMG Black Series Coupe is also substantially revised over its standard C63 AMG sedan stablemate. Highly-contoured alcantara seats are added to help keep drivers from sliding around in turns, and back seats have been removed to save weight. The Black Series also features a standard three-spoke sport steering wheel with shift paddles.
While Mercedes has yet to announce pricing for the C63 AMG Black Series Coupe, we imagine it'll come close to touching six figures. Unfortunately, fans of Mercedes' C63 AMG sedan won't be privy to a Black Series variant. According to Mercedes, the limited-edition, high-performance Black Series trim is for two-door cars only.
