2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

  • High-performance Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution to be canceled after 2015
  • A replacement for the sporty Mitsubishi hasn't been announced
  • Car enters the 2015 model year with few updates, pending its demise

The high-performance Mitsubishi Evolution won't be on sale for much longer. So says Mitsubishi, which recently confirmed that it plans to cancel the rally-inspired sports sedan after the 2015 model year.

The move won't come as much of a surprise to fans of the sporty sedan, since the car has already been canceled in several other markets around the world. In the States, the Lancer Evolution has been largely unchanged for the last several model years, a departure from the car's past schedule of frequent model-year changes to incorporate sporty, high-tech updates.

Though the decision to cancel the Evolution will surely disappoint enthusiasts, it likely signifies Mitsubishi's increasing commitment to subcompact and utilitarian vehicles, especially because Mitsubishi has not yet announced a successor to the Evolution. In the U.S., that may mean more cars like the tiny Mirage, which came out last year to challenge subcompact rivals such as the Nissan Versa and Ford Fiesta.

When does the Evolution officially come to an end? According to Mitsubishi, it will be as soon as dealers have sold all of the car's 2015 models. That could take some time; the 2015 Evolution only recently went on sale, so enthusiasts looking for an Evo still have a little while to scoop up a new model before the car is discontinued entirely.

Interestingly, the Mitsubishi Evolution's pending demise hasn't stopped Mitsubishi from making a few changes to the car for the 2015 model year. The sedan's side-view mirrors now include built-in turn signals, while the high-performance MR trim adds upscale features such as rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, a proximity key and a Rockford Fosgate sound system.

Under its hood, the Evo retains its 291-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, while all-wheel drive and a 5-speed manual transmission remain standard on the base GSR trim. A 6-speed dual-clutch automatic is standard on the MR. Available options include leather seats, a sunroof, heated seats, and extra sound insulation for a quieter ride.

What it means to you: After 2015, you'll only be able to get an Evo on the used market.
