2013 Honda trucks, SUVs and minivans get standard backup cameras

2013 CR-Z, Accord & Crosstour models also include the feature

Overall, 94% of all 2013 Hondas will have backup cameras

Driveways and parking lots are dangerous places, especially for pets and children. Their smaller stature can make them difficult for drivers to see, especially when backing up. Every year, scores of children are injured or killed by reversing vehicles.

Fortunately, simple and relatively inexpensive technology can improve drivers' visibility and make backing up safer. New cars are increasingly including backup cameras as standard or optional equipment to help improve safety and reduce accidents. Honda will include the technology on all of its 2013 trucks, SUVs and minivans, as well as many other 2013 models. In all, 94% of 2013 Hondas will include a backup camera.

The higher ride height in larger vehicles can cause visibility issues, so Honda will equip all 2013 Honda Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline and CR-V models with a backup camera as standard equipment.

Some smaller cars also have rearward visibility challenges, often as a result of designs with steeper glass, thicker pillars and higher tail ends. Both the Honda Crosstour and CR-Z have extra rear glass below the beltline to aid visibility, but will also include backup cameras for 2013. The Accord, which will be an all-new model for 2013, gets the technology standard, too.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) introduced a regulation to make backup cameras a requirement starting in 2014, but has since delayed a decision on the rule. Still, Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of product planning for American Honda, says customers want the technology included.

"At Honda, we feel that this visibility feature will be important to many families and we're widely applying it even before we may be required to do so," Poponi said.

The company is also pursuing more advanced safety technologies like collision warning, lane departure warning and blind-spot alerts. While these can add thousands to the price of a vehicle, the simple and relatively inexpensive backup camera can aid driver visibility - an important aspect of safety - without breaking the bank.

What it means to you: Most 2013 Hondas, including all trucks, minivans and SUVs, will include standard backup cameras to improve drivers' rearward visibility.
