New Subaru Outback Will Debut at New York Auto Show
- Subaru's next-generation Outback coming to New York Auto Show
- All-wheel-drive wagon will offer new styling inside and out
- New Outback will be based on updated Legacy revealed in Chicago
There's an all-new Subaru Outback coming to this year's New York Auto Show. The automaker recently confirmed that it plans to release the new Outback in New York, revealing a teaser image, and little else, ahead of the show.
We can't see much from the latest Outback's teaser image, except that the popular all-wheel-drive wagon appears destined for a full makeover. The photo shows new headlights, a new grille and new wheels, while it also hints at totally new lines. Maybe the biggest change is the less-pronounced fenders, which have been a controversial part of the current Outback's look. In all, we expect the Outback's new styling to be heavily based on the redesigned 2015 Subaru Legacy, which was revealed earlier this year at the Chicago Auto Show.
Subaru hasn't announced many details beyond the teaser image, except to say that the Outback "blends carlike handling and SUV capability." That's no surprise, since this has largely been the Outback's purpose since going on sale in the mid-1990s.
But we do expect big things from the upcoming Outback. In addition to totally new styling, the latest Outback is likely to offer a more advanced interior than the current model, which has an interior that trends more toward simple than modern. We also expect that the new Outback will feature a few more technologies in addition to the impressive array of safety features already available in the current model.
Beyond the Outback's new features and updated interior and exterior styling, we expect that the wagon will offer many of the same traits as the current one: standard all-wheel drive, available 4- or 6-cylinder engines and handling that's more carlike than SUV rivals. We also expect a few inches of extra ground clearance compared to the Legacy and a wagon-only body style.
We'll have more updates on the next-generation Outback when Subaru lifts the cover off of it later this month in New York.
