  • Nissan says the Hi-Cross previews its future crossovers.
  • A teaser video previews the model's lines.
  • Many experts speculate the Hi-Cross could replace the Murano.

Nissan will show an all-new concept crossover at this year's Geneva Auto Show. Officially dubbed the Hi-Cross Concept, the futuristic new model features sweeping lines and may preview an upcoming replacement for the automaker's popular Murano crossover.

Although Nissan has remained quiet on details surrounding the Hi-Cross, the automaker recently released a teaser video that shows the crossover's basic exterior design and several of its interior details. On the outside, the SUV includes a host of distinctive features ranging from muscular character lines running down both sides to oversized wheel arches, a roof spoiler, and a "kinked" C-pillar reminiscent of today's Murano. Inside, the only feature revealed was the Hi-Cross's unique gauges, which are especially sporty for a crossover and resemble the instrument panel from a fighter jet.

Despite the Hi-Cross's potential to replace the midsize Murano, Nissan says the concept vehicle is purely a design study. According to the automaker, the crossover doesn't stand to replace any one vehicle but rather previews the future styling of each of Nissan's global crossovers - a list that includes the Murano, the Rogue, the upcoming Pathfinder and the compact X-Trail, which is sold in several global markets outside the United States.

Nissan says the Hi-Cross Concept will share the stage in Geneva with an all-new subcompact concept car dubbed the Invitation Concept. According to Nissan, the Invitation previews an upcoming production model scheduled to join the subcompact Micra and tiny Juke crossover among the automaker's smallest global offerings sometime in 2013.

Many industry experts are speculating that the Hi-Cross will replace the Murano due to the concept crossover's timing. While the Murano recorded nearly 53,000 US sales last year and remains highly praised in the automotive press, the uniquely-styled SUV went on sale nearly four years ago as a 2009 model, making it one of the oldest designs among today's current crop of midsize crossovers.

Regardless of whether the Hi-Cross sees production, we'll be on hand to cover the concept crossover's unveiling - and all the exciting debuts in Geneva - as the show kicks off in early March.

What it means to you: If the Hi-Cross does get the green light to replace the Murano, look for great deals on leftover Muranos as dealers rush to clear out aging inventory.
