  • Nissan offering free charging for new buyers of the Leaf EV
  • No Charge to Charge program covers thousands of public chargers
  • Program covers all new Leaf models sold on or after April 1, 2014

Nissan has officially announced a new program that allows Leaf owners to charge their cars for free at thousands of public charging stations across the country. Revealed earlier this month, the No Charge to Charge program provides Leaf owners with free access to public charging stations for 2 years.

According to Nissan, the program gives Leaf drivers access to public charging stations that accept the EZ-Charge card; there are more than 2,600 stations across the country. At first, Nissan is rolling out the No Charge to Charge promotion in 10 U.S. cities: Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Phoenix, Portland, Ore., Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Don't be disappointed if your area didn't make the list; Nissan plans to expand the promotion to 15 more cities in the next year.

Recent Leaf buyers will especially like one particularly generous part of the No Charge to Charge promotion: Nissan has made the program retroactive to Leaf models purchased on or after April 1, 2014. Shoppers who bought a Leaf in the last few months won't miss out on the promotion, even though it technically didn't start until July 1.

Although Nissan hasn't confirmed how long the No Charge to Charge promotion will be available, we suspect that it won't last forever. The automaker certainly hopes it will spur sales, noting that the program will help combat range anxiety by offering free charging at thousands of locations throughout the country.

The fully electric Nissan Leaf is a 5-door hatchback and the best-selling electric car on the road, with more than 120,000 units sold since it launched in late 2010. The Leaf offers an 84-mile range and a base price tag of around $30,000 with shipping.

What it means to you: The No Charge to Charge program will likely boost sales of Nissan's already popular Leaf hatchback.
