ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2012 Nissan Rogue

author photo by Jeffrey Archer
  • Nissan will release an all-new Rogue early next year
  • The SUV will likely be based on the automaker's Hi-Cross Concept
  • Available features could include third-row seating and a hybrid powertrain

Nissan is preparing an all-new version of its compact Rogue crossover for release in 2013. While the automaker hasn't announced many details surrounding the vehicle's debut, it did confirm that the new Rogue will be among five new models scheduled to arrive at Nissan dealerships in the next 15 months.

Most industry observers expect the new Rogue will look like Nissan's Hi-Cross Concept, which was shown at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show earlier this year. Finished in a unique shade of light green and sporting chrome wheels, the Hi-Cross Concept featured a small third row of seats-a convenient option not currently offered on the Rogue-and a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Nissan didn't confirm if those features will carry over to the all-new Rogue. However, adding a hybrid powertrain would give the SUV an advantage over most of its rivals in the segment. Toyota recently rolled out a fully electric version of its RAV4 SUV, co-developed with EV manufacturer Tesla, but most of the Rogue's competitors-including the Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-5-only have gasoline engines. Even Ford, which once offered its compact Escape with a miserly 2.5-liter hybrid 4-cylinder, has not yet announced if that powerplant will return to its freshly redesigned 2013 model.

Nissan has been tight-lipped on details surrounding the new Rogue, but the automaker did announce that production of the compact SUV will shift from the automaker's Kyushu plant in southern Japan to its Smyrna facility in Tennessee. There, the Rogue will be built alongside the Nissan Altima, Frontier, Maxima, Pathfinder and Xterra as well as Infiniti's all-new JX crossover. Nissan also plans to start production of its fully electric Nissan Leaf in Smyrna within the next year.

We expect to see the new Rogue at an auto show later this year or early in 2013. Other new models scheduled to be released by Nissan in the next 15 months include an updated Altima, which recently began production, and new versions of its mid-size Pathfinder SUV and compact Sentra sedan. The automaker will also roll out an as yet unnamed fifth new model, which will likely be an updated version of its subcompact Versa hatchback.

What it means to you: We'll provide more details on the all-new Rogue as they become available. For now, expect deals on the outgoing model to get better and better.
