ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2013 Nissan Altima

  • Nissan prices falling on Altima, Sentra
  • Armada SUV lowering its base price by $4,400
  • Prices too high for Internet searches

Nissan recently announced it's cutting prices on seven of its most popular models. The price cut is aimed at improving Nissan's position in the U.S. market. It applies to seven vehicles that make up three-quarters of the brand's sales.

According to Nissan, the cuts were necessary because pricing placed many popular models just above the "maximum" price cutoff on popular Internet sites. For example, a Nissan model with a popular package may have ended up a few hundred dollars over a website's "under $25,000" search function.

The biggest price cut was to Nissan's Armada full-size SUV. The brand trimmed $4,400 off its base price. The Rogue SUV also will see an impressive $2,030 price cut. Pricing for top-end versions of the Maxima sedan dropped by $3,000, while the Murano crossover's upscale trims will see a $2,410 price cut.

Some of Nissan's more affordable models will see prices cut, as well. The Sentra's base price is dropping by $730, while Nissan is trimming the Altima's base price by $580. The popular Nissan Juke is getting a price cut, too, with top-end trim levels losing around $1,290 from their base prices.

Nissan says its lower base prices go into effect on Friday, May 3. That's good news for shoppers, because the new base prices will even apply to cars currently in dealer inventory. That means those who were considering a Nissan Armada may save a whopping $4,400 by waiting a few days to buy the full-size SUV.

While the price cuts may seem substantial, they may not save buyers much money. Although Nissan hasn't confirmed it, the cuts will likely replace many of the brand's incentives. Nissan has been among the top automakers in cash-back incentives, which offer money back to drivers who pay in cash for a Nissan. With the price cuts, the brand will likely be more cautious about those incentives going forward.

Nissan did not announce price cuts for any of its other cars, such as the subcompact Versa, the 370Z sports car, the Pathfinder SUV, the Quest minivan, the Leaf EV or the high-performance GT-R. Pricing was also unchanged for the Frontier and Titan pickups, and for the truck-based Xterra.

What it means to you: With Nissan prices falling, buyers who wrote off the brand may have a reason to take a second look.
