If you're driving a Nissan Leaf and you encounter another Leaf in traffic, what's the proper protocol? To figure it out, Nissan has posted an open question on its Facebook page, asking Leaf owners and fans to suggest the proper "Leaf wave" that drivers can give one another on the road.

The concept of a wave or nod between owners of certain cars isn't new. Chevrolet Corvette owners are famous for acknowledging one another, as are drivers of Jeep Wranglers, Porsches and just about all vintage sports cars. But while those drivers just plainly wave to one another, Nissan is wondering if a revolution is in order for its revolutionary electric car.

In its recent Facebook post, Nissan provided fans with three ideas: a traditional wave, a peace sign, or a "zero" sign to signify the car's zero emissions. Nissan is calling for photographs of alternate suggestions to be submitted to the Leaf's Facebook page by the end of the day on Thursday, July 28, when the automaker will reveal the ultimate Leaf owner wave.

"Saying ‘hello' to a Leaf owner isn't just an act of kindness," says Nissan on the Leaf's Facebook page. "It's a sign of camaraderie."

Leaf drivers apparently agree. Suggestions on the car's Facebook page, which have primarily come from owners, include the thumbs up, a fist pump, the motion that selects "drive" on the car's shift lever, and even screaming to help break up the monotony of the electric car's near-silent hum - and draw attention from the combustion engine crowd.

Whatever the final decision is, it's unlikely the wave will find much use - for now. The automaker has only sold around 4,000 units of its fully-electric car in the United States, meaning the chances of a Leaf owner encountering another one on the street are fairly slim. But the wave may see more use soon, as the automaker predicts more than 25,000 units will be on the road by the end of next year.
