Porsche 918 Spyder: Frankfurt Auto Show
What Is It?
The Porsche 918 Spyder is a V8-powered exotic supercar with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Essentially the first of its kind, the 918 Spyder boasts a 608-horsepower 4.6-liter gas-powered V8. That powerplant is mated to three electric motors that combine for 286 hp. The result is a whopping 887 hp, which can propel the car to 60 miles per hour in just 2.8 seconds. But there's a green side too: Thanks to its electric motors, the 918 Spyder can go around 20 miles on electric power alone.
The 918 Spyder will start around $850,000, though fully equipped models can reach $1 million.
When Can You Get It?
Later this year or early in 2014
Add It to Your Shopping List Because...
There's nothing quite like it -- yet. The Porsche 918 Spyder is the first in a line of hypercars (along with the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari) that boasts plug-in hybrid technology. It is the ultimate in Porsche engineering and boasts absurd performance numbers. Of course, with that comes absurd pricing -- so it's unlikely you'll be able to add it to your shopping list.
Other Cars to Consider
LaFerrari -- Ferrari's hybrid supercar is due out sometime next year. It's expected to beat many of the Porsche's performance numbers thanks to an insane 923 hp.
McLaren P1 -- The dual-clutch McLaren P1 is yet another exotic supercar with plug-in hybrid technology. With 903 hp, it's expected to offer similar performance to the 918 -- though it's not offered with a removable roof.
Used Porsche Carrera GT -- If it's a high-performance Porsche you're after, save some big money and get a Carrera GT. The stick-shift, V10-powered supercar is as raw as they come -- a departure from the more civilized 918 Spyder.
