Siri Eyes Free System Coming to 6 New 2014 Chevrolet Models
- Chevrolet adding eyes-free Siri system to more cars
- Siri is a popular personal assistant for iPhone users
- System coming to Camaro, Cruze, Equinox, Malibu, Volt, SS
Chevrolet recently announced it's adding the Siri Eyes Free system to six new cars for the 2014 model year. The program allows iPhone users to access the Siri voice command system through Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system without taking their eyes off the road.
Today, the eyes-free Siri system is offered only on two Chevrolet models -- the subcompact Spark and Sonic. But that will change for 2014, when Chevrolet adds Siri Eyes Free to the Camaro, Cruze, Equinox, Malibu and Volt. The program will also be included in the new Chevrolet SS, a full-size sedan set to go on sale later this year.
For iPhone users, the feature is easy to use. Once a driver uses Bluetooth to pair an iPhone to the MyLink infotainment system, he or she can press a button on the steering wheel to access Siri, which is the iPhone's voice-activated personal assistant. Siri can answer questions, make recommendations, access text messages and place hands-free calls.
"The response to Siri Eyes Free integration in Chevy Sonic and Spark from our customers has been remarkable," said Chris Perry, Chevrolet's U.S. vice president of marketing. "Siri complements MyLink's existing capabilities to help deliver an incredible driving experience, so we're excited to expand this to even more customers."
While iPhone users interested in Chevrolet models may be swayed by Siri Eyes Free, the system won't be standard. Drivers first have to specify Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system, which is optional on some Chevrolet models. In the Chevrolet Cruze, for instance, MyLink is only offered on the mid-level LT model and above -- and it's part of the $550 Technology Package. Once a driver specifies MyLink, however, Siri Eyes Free is included.
So what if Chevrolet isn't adding the feature to the model you're considering? Our best advice is to hold tight. We expect to see the system reach even more cars for the 2015 model year.
What it means to you: If you have an iPhone, Siri Eyes Free is an easy way to stay connected on the go.
