Sporty Volkswagen Beetle GSR Pricing Announced
- Volkswagen Beetle GSR priced from $30,790
- Features unique black and yellow paint, 210 horsepower
- Retro-themed model recalls 1973 Beetle GSR
Volkswagen has officially announced pricing for its retro-themed Beetle GSR. The automaker says the sporty limited-edition Beetle will start from $30,790 with shipping when it goes on sale for the 2014 model year.
According to Volkswagen, that price is for a Beetle GSR with a 6-speed manual transmission. Shoppers who want VW's slick DSG dual-clutch automatic must spend an extra $1,100. But regardless of the model they choose, Beetle GSR drivers will get a unique ownership experience.
For starters, they'll have more horsepower than they would with other Beetles. The new GSR is the first Beetle to use the 210-hp 4-cylinder turbo engine, which boasts a slight power bump over the current 200-hp powerplant. While other Beetles will soon add the more muscular engine, the GSR gets it first.
The Beetle GSR's other distinctive feature is its color scheme. Painted to mimic the original 1973 Beetle GSR, the black-and-yellow 2014 model offers bright-yellow doors, fenders and other panels, along with a black roof and a striped black hood. The cabin even carries on the theme with a black interior and yellow trim.
Beyond its more powerful engine and flashy colors, the Beetle GSR offers a few other unique features. For one, it boasts 19-inch alloy wheels with wide tires for improved handling. It also includes a body-colored wing, black-painted brake calipers and an individually numbered plaque on the steering wheel.
Although Volkswagen hasn't announced when the Beetle GSR will reach showrooms, we expect to see it this summer. That's good news for shoppers who want a Beetle that's guaranteed to stand out. But if that's you, we recommend acting fast -- Volkswagen only plans to bring 3,500 Beetle GSRs to the U.S.
What it means to you: The Volkswagen Beetle GSR offers a look-at-me color scheme and a sporty character to match.
