2013 Subaru BRZ

author photo by Jeffrey Archer

Thanks to a series of teaser images released by Subaru, it's becoming increasingly clear what its new BRZ sports car will look like when it debuts later this month at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The most recent photo provides the sharpest picture yet of the car's general outline and also previews its 200-horsepower, direct-injected boxer four-cylinder engine.

In addition to showing off its clean, sporty lines, long hood and short trunk, the BRZ's newest teaser image also reveals the coupe's small size. Indeed, Subaru confirms the BRZ measures just 165 inches in length - about the same size as the Audi TT and more than a foot shorter than the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Under the hood, the BRZ features a 2.0-liter "boxer" four-cylinder, so named because its flat configuration gives the appearance that the cylinders are fighting - or "boxing" - with one another. Though unusual on modern cars, boxer engines are a hallmark of recent Subarus.

But the boxer engine may be one of the few Subaru traits planned for the BRZ. That's because the sporty coupe was co-developed with Toyota, and will likely trade some of Subaru's somewhat quirky features for broader appeal. For example, the BRZ will lose Subaru's signature all-wheel drive - a staple on every one of its cars since 1997 - in favor of rear-wheel drive, which should provide sportier handling.

We expect to learn more about the BRZ when Subaru finally pulls the cover off it later this month in Frankfurt. Toyota's version, dubbed the FT-86, will be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October before sales of both models start sometime in mid-2012.

While Subaru and Toyota haven't announced pricing for their upcoming coupes, industry observers expect base prices between $22,000 and $25,000. That would directly align the FT-86 and BRZ against other sporty coupes like the Hyundai Genesis and Ford Mustang, which start around $22,000.
