  • Volkswagen's sporty Golf R 400 likely to see production
  • High-performance hatch will offer 400 hp; 0-to-60 time of 3.9 seconds
  • Volkswagen has not yet announced when the Golf R 400 will reach production

The ultra-high-performance Volkswagen Golf R 400 hot hatch may soon enter production. That's the latest from Volkswagen, which recently suggested that the sporty Golf has already been given a green light for production, even though it debuted in concept form only a few days ago at the Beijing Auto Show.

So, what makes the Golf R 400 so sporty? There are many important factors, but the most obvious is its engine. While the high-speed hot hatch uses the same 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder as a current Volkswagen GTI, the powerplant is turned up to a whopping 400 horsepower in the Golf R 400. That means the 3-door hatchback will reach 60 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds, on its way to a top speed of nearly 175 mph.

The Golf R 400 also boasts a few other performance-oriented features. The car clearly boasts larger brakes than a standard Golf or GTI and also touts a wider track for improved grip. Also helping to improve grip is standard all-wheel drive, which gives the powerful car a huge performance benefit over other front-drive hatchbacks.

The Golf R 400 also includes a series of upgrades to its exterior. There are larger wheels, low-profile tires and a sporty body kit that gives the hatchback an especially muscular look. We also like the aggressive front and rear bumpers, which almost look like they're borrowed from a race car.

We're not sure what else to expect from a production-ready Golf R 400, largely because Volkswagen was tight-lipped about further details at this year's Beijing show. For example, while we assume that the car has a highly tuned sport suspension, Volkswagen hasn't confirmed that, and the brand also hasn't detailed upgrades to the car's exhaust, chassis or steering.

For that reason, we're eager to hear more about the Golf R 400 as it gets closer to production, which will likely happen sometime in the next year or two.

What it means to you: The Volkswagen Golf R 400 has the makings of the ultimate hot hatchback.
