Chevrolet Trailblazer Among Recalled GM-Built SUVs
- 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Ranier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x recalled.
- A potential circuit board short could cause a fire.
- Affects vehicles originally sold in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
A broad safety recall of 249,260 SUVs built by General Motors affects five 2006-2007 models. All five models are built on GM's GMT 360 platform, but not all are branded as GM vehicles. The voluntary safety recall addresses a potential circuit board short in the driver's door module, which could cause a fire.
In addition to Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy and Buick Ranier--all GM-branded vehicles--the recall also affects Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x. The geographically limited recall only affects vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the federal regulator that handles recalls, GM said that fluid could enter the driver's door module, potentially causing corrosion and a short. Not only could the power windows or locks become inoperable, but the short could also cause an odor, smoke or a fire.
To remedy the problem, GM says that dealers will replace the driver's master power window switch at no charge to owners. By law, dealers must stop sale of recalled used vehicles until repairs are complete.
GM has not announced a notification schedule but says that three different automakers will handle alerting owners. GM will notify owners of recalled Buick Ranier, Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy models. Isuzu will notify affected Ascender owners, and Saab will contact owners of the 9-7x.
