  • The recall affects 45,747 units.
  • 2008 and 2009 EX-L and Touring models are affected.
  • Owners of affected vehicles will be notified in March by mail.

Honda is recalling more than 45,000 units of its 2008 and 2009 Odyssey due to a problem with the minivan's tailgate. That's the latest from the automaker and the federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, who recently announced the recall.

According to the NHTSA, the struts that raise and support the Odyssey's available power tailgate may include a manufacturing flaw that can cause pressurized gas to escape, resulting in reduced strut performance and even total failure. The agency says that could result in unexpected closure of the rear tailgate, increasing the risk of injury to drivers and passengers who are accessing the minivan's cargo area.

Honda says the recall affects Odyssey EX-L and Touring trim levels, which were the only versions of the minivan equipped with the power tailgate. Interestingly, the recall doesn't apply to 2005 through 2007 models or the 2010 Odyssey, despite those vans sharing their design with the 45,747 affected 2008 and 2009 models.

According to Honda, owners of affected vehicles will be notified of the recall by mail beginning March 13. Those customers will be asked to bring their vehicles to dealerships, where both gas struts will be replaced free of charge. Honda says customers with any questions regarding the recall can call the automaker at 1-800-999-1009.

Despite the recall, Honda's family-friendly Odyssey has been lauded for its impressive quality since 1995, when the minivan first arrived in dealerships. Now in its fourth generation, the Odyssey recorded more than 100,000 sales last year, making it one of the most popular minivans in America. Today's Odyssey comes in LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite trim levels, with base prices ranging from $29,000 to nearly $45,000. Thanks to a standard 248-horsepower V6 and available 5- or 6-speed automatic transmissions, the minivan achieves nearly 20 miles per gallon in city driving and more than 27 mpg on the highway.

What it means to you: If you own a 2008 or 2009 Odyssey EX-L or Touring, don't be surprised to see a recall notice in mid-March.
