2013 Ford Mustang

Some people argue that the Ford Mustang is some kind of outdated relic, but that's pretty laughable from the driver seat of the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. The car is brutally fast, of course, but it also handles superbly, and it's stuffed full of modern features. Indeed, the GT500 doesn't just compete against American muscle cars; it's also a worthy rival to European standouts like the BMW M3. Here are 5 Reasons to save your pennies for this future classic.

1. Power. Power! POWER!

When it comes to horsepower, how much is too much? We don't know, but we can tell you this: flooring it in the Shelby GT500 is about as much fun as you can have on four wheels. The Shelby's supercharged V8 cranks out an unbelievable 662 horsepower, and it sounds pretty epic too. You'll be turning every highway on-ramp into your own personal dragstrip. In related news, this Mustang will do a number on your driving record if you're not careful.

2. Track-Ready Hardware

Obviously, the Shelby can crush it in a straight line, but it's also set up to dominate a winding racetrack. With hardcore Brembo front brakes, massive performance tires, and options like adjustable shocks and Recaro racing seats, the GT500 is almost as agile as it is fast. Don't sweat the haters who decry the Shelby's "primitive" solid rear axle; they'll be the ones in your rearview mirror on track day.

3. Just Plain Mean Styling

When a Shelby GT500 pulls up in your rearview, your instinctive reaction is to get the heck out of the way. Maybe it's the silver cobra on the grille, or the vented power dome in the hood, or just the sheer presence of the thing. We can't put our finger on it, but everyone immediately knows that this Mustang means business. Not that the regular Mustang GT is a wallflower, but the GT500 clearly plays in a bigger, badder league.

4. Coupe or Convertible

Some high-performance models are fixed-roof-only, but Ford graciously offers the GT500 in both coupe and convertible body styles. So it's up to you whether you want the coupe's classic fastback lines and superior rigidity, or the convertible's fun-in-the-sun power soft-top and even more raucous V8 soundtrack.

5. Up-to-Date Technology

If you still think of the Mustang as a bare-bones muscle car, think again. Standard on every GT500 is a high-resolution 4.2-inch driver information screen with Track Apps, which let you keep track of acceleration and lap times like a pro. There's even a thumping Shaker stereo and an optional navigation system.

The 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is American muscle at its finest. Drive one if you can; it's an experience you won't soon forget.
