2013 Honda Accord

Not too long ago, we drove the 2013 Honda Accord Touring Sedan, which made for a nice comparison to our long-term EX-L 4-cylinder version. More recently, we tested yet another version of Honda's all-new-for-2013 Accord. This time, it's the EX-L V6 Coupe.

Save the Manuals!

The 2013 Honda Accord Coupe has the same 278-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine as the Touring Sedan, but this time we requested the 6-speed manual transmission. For years, Honda's manual transmissions have been regarded as the best in the business, and that holds true here. The clutch is very light, and most will find pleasure in rowing their own gears. The only way to get this powertrain combination is to opt for the 2013 Honda Accord coupe, as the manual is only paired with the 4-cylinder in sedan form.

By offering this combo in coupe form only, Honda has created an under-the-radar sports car. With a 0-to-60 time of just over six seconds, the Accord is certainly quick, if not deceptively fast. The exhaust sounds great when pushed hard, but it settles down nicely and practically disappears when cruising down the highway. Those looking for higher fuel economy will want to select the 6-speed automatic, as it is rated at an EPA-estimated 25 miles per gallon combined, while the manual is rated at 3 mpg less.

Split-Personality Interior

If you've been in any Accord since the mid '90s, you will instantly feel right at home in the 2013 version. Every button and switch is exactly where you remember it being, and all those locations just seem right. The chosen materials are nice to look at and pleasant to touch. Unlike other vehicles we recently tested, the Accord remembers settings after the car is turned off. If you were, say, being economical and had Eco mode on, it will still be on the next time you start the car.

Unfortunately, Honda's navigation system feels like a remnant from the 1990s. Although Honda considers the 2013 Accord's version to be "significantly improved," it seems they added more bells and whistles to a system that ranks substantially behind many competitors. For example, the FM traffic feature will show incidents ahead, but you must take several steps (one of which is removing your eyes from the road) to see what has happened and how traffic has been affected. We recommend saving yourself $2,000 by skipping the navigation.

Having tested many flavors of the all-new 2013 Honda Accord, it's easy to see why it continues to be one of the most popular vehicles on the road. The extensive list of both standard and optional technologies, the various engine and transmission choices and the focus on safety make a compelling argument. If you're in the market for a midsize vehicle, try out a few different combinations of Honda's most popular car.
