Pros: Well-priced; handsome new styling; tough truck for tough jobs

Cons: Almost no equipment; low-rent interior; some cheap plastics

What's New: The Chevrolet Silverado is completely redesigned for the 2014 model year to offer new styling, new engines and improved capability.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado comes in several trims, ranging from the base-level Work Truck trim to the luxury-oriented Silverado High Country. This overview focuses on the Work Truck, a stripped-down commercial-oriented model aimed at fleet shoppers or drivers who need a truck that can take abuse.

That means you shouldn't expect too many features from the Silverado Work Truck. Indeed, you'll find only the basics: air conditioning, power locks, cruise control and an AM/FM stereo, for instance. There's no CD player, no auxiliary jack for an iPod and no satellite radio. Base-level trucks don't even use cloth seats, as vinyl is standard instead.

But the tradeoff for that lack of equipment is reasonable pricing. The Silverado WT starts around $26,500 with shipping, making it one of the least-expensive full-size pickups you can buy. Opt for a double cab and you'll pay around $30,600, while 4-door Crew Cab models start around $34,700 with shipping. Those prices are on par with rivals such as the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, though the Silverado's driving dynamics and updated interior give it the edge over both of those vehicles.

For drivers who can't live with only the basics, Chevrolet offers a few optional extras. You can add in a CD player, for instance, and GM's OnStar telematics system. Same goes for SiriusXM satellite radio and a center-mounted touchscreen. And Crew Cab models even offer available navigation.

Under the hood, the Silverado WT uses a 4.3-liter V6. That's the same engine size as last year, though Chevrolet says the engine itself is all-new. It boasts 285 horsepower -- an increase of 90 hp from last year's model -- and 305 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is 18 miles per gallon city/24 mpg hwy with 2-wheel drive or 17 mpg city/22 mpg hwy with 4-wheel drive.

For shoppers who want more grunt, the Silverado WT also offers a new 5.3-liter V8 that makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. That engine costs around $1,000 extra and returns 16 mpg city/23 mpg hwy with 2-wheel drive or 16 mpg city/22 mpg hwy with 4-wheel drive.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado WT is a great pickup for drivers who don't want -- or need -- all the bells and whistles. If you're driving to job sites, hauling machinery and visiting construction zones, this may be the truck for you.
