2014 Hyundai Veloster

by AutoTrader

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo has got the power to back up its sporty looks, and that alone makes it worth the premium over the regular Veloster. But is it a better buy than the other turbo hatchbacks in its class? That's a tougher question, but we think there's definitely an argument to be made for Hyundai's hot hatch. Here are five reasons why the Veloster Turbo is a must-drive if you're looking for speed on the cheap.

Packs a Punch

If acceleration is something you care about, the base Veloster's 138-horsepower engine comes up short. But the Veloster Turbo more than compensates with its 201 ponies, and since it's got a fancy twin-scroll turbocharger, there's no lag time like with older turbos -- you just plant your right foot and boom, you're gone. Plus, with 195 lb-ft of torque on tap, you get a nice shove back into your seat, which comes in handy for impressing passengers.

Looks Great

The Turbo comes standard with 18-inch wheels, and that's just the beginning. It also has dual center-mounted exhaust outlets that look like something out of a Porsche Boxster brochure. Furthermore, every turbocharged Veloster is treated to a sporty lower body kit that makes it stand out from the base model. When you add it all up, this is one hot hatch that definitely looks the part.

Solid Fuel Economy

With the satisfying, bolt-action manual transmission, the Veloster Turbo returns 24 miles per gallon city and 33 mpg on the highway. That's not bad for a car with this kind of speed. The optional 6-speed automated manual drops to 31 mpg hwy, but it still returns 24 mpg in urban driving. Anytime you can find spunky turbocharged performance and 30-plus mpg in the same place, you've got a winning combination.

Tech Features Galore

Every Veloster Turbo boasts a 7-in touchscreen with user-friendly controls and colorful driver information screens next to its gauges. Moreover, Hyundai throws in Bluetooth, a USB port, the Blue Link connectivity suite and a 450-watt audio system, all for the same entry price. Try to find standard features like these on the German competition -- it's just not going to happen.

Handy 3-Door Design

The Veloster Turbo may resemble a standard 2-door hatchback, but in fact, it's got a third door on the passenger side that makes back seat access a lot simpler. It doesn't hurt that the Veloster's back seat is pretty roomy to begin with, unless your rear passengers are over 6 feet tall. For shoppers who need a true 4-passenger car, the Veloster Turbo hits the spot.

AutoTrader Says:

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo is speedy, sleek and full of tech -- and you get all this for one of the lowest prices in the segment. It's hard not to like this hopped-up Hyundai hatch.
