2014 Rolls-Royce Ghost: Overview
Cons: Incredibly expensive to buy, own and run; depreciation will be huge; still feels a bit like an expensive 7 Series
The 2014 Rolls-Royce Ghost is a full-size luxury sedan aimed at attracting more buyers to the well-respected Rolls-Royce brand. It does that by offering a lower base price than the even larger Phantom: The Ghost starts at $264,000 (or $304,000 for the roomier, extended-wheelbase version), while the Phantom's starting price is well over $400,000.
But despite its lower base price, the Rolls-Royce Ghost doesn't require much compromise in terms of luxury. There's still a long list of standard equipment, for instance, that includes a navigation system, 4-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, power-closing rear doors, heated front and rear seats, umbrellas stored in the rear doors, massaging front seats and active air suspension. The options list is even longer and includes dual rear DVD players, automatic high beams and a night vision camera.
The Ghost doesn't make compromises under the hood either. There's a 6.6-liter V12 that makes 563 horsepower and a monstrous 575 lb-ft of torque, all sent to the rear wheels by a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. It's the same transmission as in the BMW 760Li, which the Rolls-Royce Ghost is based on.
While the 2014 Rolls-Royce Ghost is no sports car, Rolls-Royce also rolled out a coupe version for the 2014 model year. Covered in a separate overview, it's called the Wraith, and it boasts sleek styling and a sportier driving feel.
