New 2014 Volkswagen Touareg X Marks SUV's 10th Anniversary
- Touareg X celebrates the SUV's 10th anniversary
- Offers several upscale touches inside and out
- Only 1,000 to be made, all with Touareg's TDI V6 engine
Volkswagen is celebrating 10 years of Touareg production by releasing a new limited-edition trim level of the upscale SUV. The all-new 2014 Volkswagen Touareg X boasts several appearance changes and other high-end touches over a standard Touareg TDI.
The Touareg X's biggest changes over the standard model come on the SUV's exterior. There, it includes unique 19-inch Moab aluminum alloy wheels, a distinctive Moonlight Blue Pearl paint finish, new LED taillights and badging that displays the car's status as a limited-production Touareg X.
But revisions to the Touareg X don't stop there. Inside the SUV's cabin, it boasts new ebony wood accents and leather upholstery finished in a unique Black Anthracite Vienna color with a matching black headliner. The SUV also includes aluminum accents on its door sills and pedals.
The Volkswagen Touareg X is based on the mid-range Touareg Lux trim level, which slots between the Touareg Sport and the high-end Touareg Executive. The model will be offered only with the SUV's 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine, which produces 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, and returns 20 miles per gallon city/29 mpg hwy. Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is standard, as is an 8-speed automatic transmission.
So what does Volkswagen charge for a special-edition trim level with a few unique touches? The brand says the Touareg X will start at $57,045 with shipping when it goes on sale early next year -- an increase of around $1,200 over a regular Touareg TDI Lux. But you'll have to think fast if you want a Touareg X, as Volkswagen says it plans to build only 1,000 units.
The Touareg X commemorates the 10th anniversary of Touareg sales, which began in the U.S. for the 2004 model year. Initially offered with V6 or V8 engines, the Touareg lineup now features three engine choices: a gasoline V6, a diesel V6 and a hybrid V6. Base-level Touareg models start around $45,000, while the upscale Touareg Executive can top $61,000 before options.
What it means to you: The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg X adds some upscale touches to the already luxurious -- and pricey -- Touareg TDI Lux.
