  • Debut of new midsize sedan
  • Several drivetrain choices
  • Replaces both TL and TSX

Acura announced it will unveil the production version of its new midsize sedan at the upcoming New York Auto Show. A prototype version of the 2015 Acura TLX made its debut earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show, revealing the look of the model that will replace both the TL and TSX when it arrives in showrooms later this year. But that look was incomplete, because Acura did not show the vehicle's interior design. The debut of the production version at New York will give new-car shoppers their first chance to see the whole car.

We expect the production version to closely follow the TLX Prototype, at least in terms of exterior styling. The dramatic shape of the sedan is both sporty and elegant, with clear Acura design cues such as LED headlights and a shield-shaped grille. The TLX Prototype also includes unique side mirrors with integrated LED lighting that appears to move around the edge of the mirror.

Details such as the mirrors may not make it to the production version. But the 2015 TLX will offer the same engine, transmission and drive options specified for the prototype. These include a choice of two engines, a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder or a 3.5-liter V6. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available with 4-cylinder versions and will come standard with the V6.

Two new transmissions are available, including an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic for the 4-cylinder TLX. Front-wheel-drive models also use Acura's Precision All-Wheel Steer (PAWS), which improves handling at both high and low speeds. With the optional V6, the TLX uses a new 9-speed transmission to balance performance and efficiency.

Acura detailed several advanced driver-assistance technologies that it will offer on the TLX. Among these are forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control and a blind spot monitor.

Pricing for the 2015 Acura TLX is not yet available, but considering the base prices for the TSX and TL helps determine a likely range. The TSX starts at $30,635, while the most affordable TL is priced at around $36,000. Acura says that the TLX will arrive in dealerships nationwide around the middle of this year.

What it means to you: When the new TLX replaces both the TL and TSX later this year, Acura's sedan lineup will include the compact ILX, the midsize TLX and, at the top of the range, the RLX.
