Improve Your SUV Resale Value With These Options
If you're the kind of person who trades out your cars every few years, you've come to the right place. That's because we've listed some of the top options for drivers looking to improve their SUV resale value. Pick these options and you're sure to have an easier time selling or trading in your SUV -- and you'll get some more money for it, too.
Rear-Seat DVD Player
These days, a rear-seat DVD player is a must-have for SUVs and minivans. Sure, some parents clip an iPad or other tablet behind the front headrest and let their kids watch a movie that way. But there's no substitute for having a DVD player wired into the back seats. You don't have to worry about remembering the iPad, and it's easy to just put a movie in and turn on the screen. If you don't have kids, we wouldn't recommend going out of your way to order a DVD player. But if you're choosing between two SUVs and one has a DVD player, we'd pick that one.
Before we go any further, it's important to mention that choosing 4-wheel drive won't help your resale value in some places. In Florida, Texas and most of California, for example, 4-wheel drive is an unnecessary addition that most drivers wouldn't pay extra to have. But in many northern states, 4-wheel drive is a must -- and we strongly recommend choosing it. Buyers in snowy states will expect it, and if you live in one, you'll quickly find that no 4-wheel drive often means no deal.
If you're interested in a car with an available third row, we strongly suggest choosing it. Many shoppers find a third row essential. If an SUV doesn't have it, they'll just move on to the next one. Meanwhile, drivers who don't want or need a third row probably won't turn down your SUV just because it has one. Plus, third-row seats are often fairly cheap. This is one rare option where you'll see most of your money back.
You may not tow, but we recommend the towing package anyway. One reason is that most manufacturers don't charge very much for it. Another is that a towing package is hard to retrofit if a car is built without one. But most importantly, the tow package isn't just nice to have for towing. It's also essential for drivers who want to haul bikes easily, since most bike racks mount to a car's tow hitch. The result: Get the tow package and you increase the number of people who might buy your SUV when you're done with it.
