The BMW E82 1M Coupe is a special M Series car for many reasons, and one of the biggest is its limited production run. 2011 would be the first and only year that BMW would make a 1 Series model with an M badge, and roughly only 700 of the over 6,000 cars would find their way to the United States. Options for the 1M Coupe were sparse and primarily included convenience and comfort features. Despite a short menu of options, the 1M did offer three choices of paint, including Alpine White, Black Sapphire Metallic, and the signature color Valencia Orange.

The 1M has a near-perfect weight distribution and a widened track width to maximize handling. The 1 Series M Coupe weighs 3,362 pounds and features a front/rear distribution of 51.7%/48.3%. Compared to the BMW 135i, the 1M’s track width is 2.8 inches wider up front and 1.8 inches in the rear. There is heavy use of aluminum in the suspension components and the hollow anti-roll bars to keep weight to a minimum while maximizing handling performance. Unlike the other BMW 1 Series cars, there is no option to add a sunroof to the 1M, and for good reason. Not having a sunroof saves 35 lbs from the tallest part of the vehicle, which helps lower the center of gravity and improve headroom for tall drivers or those who need to wear a helmet for track driving.

Underneath the hood of the 1M is a twin-turbo 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine with an impressive powerband. The nominal peak torque of 332 LB-FT is available from 1,500 RPM to 4,500 RPM, and there is an over-boost function that adds 37 LB-FT for a few seconds under full throttle, raising the peak torque to 369 LB-FT. The turbocharged engine produces 335 HP and allows the 1M to accelerate from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. With a potent engine and a short-throw 6-speed transmission, it’s no wonder that the BMW 1 Series M Coupe has become highly coveted among car enthusiasts.
