Back in August, Lexus showed the completely redesigned GS for the first time at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It revealed a new design direction for Lexus that the company says will soon find its way to other models.
While the styling of the mid-size sedan remains elegant, it is decidedly bolder and sportier than the more conservative styles of Lexus' past. And though no V8 will be offered to replace the GS 460, high-performance possibilities remain, relying on fewer cylinders but more high-tech goodies. Debuting at this year's SEMA show in Las Vegas, the GS 350 with F Sport package includes technologically advanced performance features and aggressive styling that conveys the car's sporting abilities.
Aside from the wide, low stance, an exclusive front fascia with mesh grille inserts and a rear spoiler and diffuser differentiate the F Sport from other GS models. All F Sports get 19-inch wheels, with staggered wheel width on rear-drive cars. Inside the F Sport gets brushed aluminum trim, perforated leather and aluminum pedals. The driver rides in a new 16-way power seat that includes power side bolsters, allowing the perfect fit necessary for sporty driving.
Looking the part is important, but the equipment underneath its new skin imparts the F Sport with its athletic prowess. Powered by a 3.5-liter V6 producing 306 horsepower, the F Sport is available in rear- or all-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic transmission includes paddle shifters and benefits from sporty features like downshift throttle blips.
Adaptive Variable Suspension helps lighter, stronger components, including the all-new multi-link rear suspension, to provide sharper handling. Rear-wheel drive cars can be equipped with the optional Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) system, which includes Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) for the first time.
DRS monitors the vehicle's speed, steering angle, G-forces and other factors to dial up to 2 degrees steering into the rear wheels. Up front, the LDH system employs electric power steering and Variable Gear Ratio Steering to continuously calculate the ideal angle of the front wheels. The advanced LDH system works harmoniously with anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control and Adaptive Variable Suspension to maximize vehicle control.
While the GS 350 F Sport was created with performance in mind, Lexus' usual collection of safety and convenience technology is also included or available. A collision warning system including active cruise control is optional, as are night vision, lane departure warning and even a new infrared camera that monitors the driver's eyes to ensure alertness.
Pricing for the GS 350 with F Sport package has not been announced, but with a stack of high-tech performance equipment and the sporty look to match, it may prove a worthy rival to its luxury sport sedan competition.
