There were several cars on display at the Hyundai stand but the big news for the South Korean automaker is the Japanese premiere of the i30 hatchback. Already launched in Europe, Hyundai built this model on the concept of their three "i"s: "inspiration," "intelligence" and "integrity."
After a video presentation to highlight their partnership with the Euro 2008 championships and 2010 South Africa World Cup, the unveiling was kicked off by two models taking the covers off of a black i30 and a blue i30.
The looks of this hatchback is similar to the Kia Spectra5. Its sleek European design is complemented by a wide stance, a long wheelbase and 17-inch wheels. Power isn't impressive so it's obvious that the i30 is aimed for fuel efficiency. The 1.6-liter engine delivers 120 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque while the bigger 2.0-liter engine puts out 140 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque.
Hyundai claims the interior has "oozing comfort and practicality from corner to corner" and that each passenger has "plush seats that cuddle you generously."
The automaker has shed much of its start-up image in recent years and became the number two manufacturer in Asia, in terms of sales in 2006. No specific sale date has been announced but Hyundai says it will be soon.
If Hyundai continues to keep up with its recent successes, it can claim to be a lot more than having the best warranties. Only time will tell if consumers will continue to welcome them with open arms.
