Nearly as iconic as the Volkswagen Beetle, the Volkswagen Microbus and the subsequent Vanagon offered families and others with needs for a spacious vehicle a unique option in the market.
While those offerings appealed to a small group of buyers, Volkswagen is entering the mainstream with its newest family vehicle, partnering with Chrysler to offer a traditional front-engine, front-wheel-drive minivan.
With Volkswagen design, styling, trim and tuning, the new Routan looks like a Volkswagen but rather than create an entirely new vehicle, Volkswagen teamed with market leader Chrysler Group to create this offering. The Routan is based on the same platform as the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country and will be built in the same plant in Windsor, Ontario Canada.
The front grille and exterior design identify the Routan as a Volkswagen and the interior styling and materials have been carefully chosen to deliver what the German brand describes as European sensibilities in design, fit and finish, as well as handling characteristics.
While exact pricing will be announced closer to the start of production next fall, Volkswagen did say that Routan will have a base price below $25,000.
The standard powertrain will be a 197-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 with 230 lb-ft of torque mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. An optional 4.0-liter V6 will offer 251 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. While Volkswagen did not offer additional details about the engines, the displacement and power ratings are the same as found in the Chrysler minivans, leading to the conclusion that the engines will come from Chrysler.
All-season traction control and an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) will be standard, and Volkswagen claims the Routan will feature European-tuned suspension. The steering will be optimized for handling and driving dynamics.
In S and SE trim levels, Routan will offer unique features such as a conversation mirror, a rear-seat entertainment system with two 9-inch screens for the second and third rows, dual power sliding doors, touch-screen navigation with a 20-MB hard drive, a power liftgate with flood lamps and thirteen cupholders.
Tailored specifically for the U.S. market, Routan will offer high-demand features such as triple-zone climate control, first- and second-row heated seats, and iPod and USB connectivity.
Volkswagen's interpretation of a decidedly American vehicle, the Routan promises value, European style and sporty driving dynamics.
