Volvo Goes to the Dogs

The car brand best known for safety has teamed up with BarkBuckleUp to promote the safe transportation of pets in vehicles. At the Chicago Auto Show, the partnership was promoted with, of course, canine companions.

There are a number of ways to secure your pet in the car, including harnesses that can attach to the seatbelt or integrated cages available on such vehicles as the Volvo XC90.

This campaign to properly secure your pet not only can prevent harm to your dog, it can also save the lives of others in the vehicle. In the event of an impact at 30 mph, a 60-pound dog can become the equivalent of a 1,200-pound projectile, causing harm to the dog and anyone it may hit. An unrestrained pet can also cause a distraction to the driver.

A loose pet in a car that's been in an accident can also interfere with emergency crews trying to reach an injured party. And if the dog gets loose from the car on a busy road, it's possible another accident may be caused or the dog injured or killed.
